Let God help you / guide you choose your spouse
“The best decision you will make after accepting Jesus as your personal saviour is who you will marry. When you hear the wisdom from our elderly people today, they always say choose your spouse wisely.
There are thousands of articles online that would tell you how to choose your spouse, and many other podcasts and videos. The advice we usually get is to choose a spouse that you both have mutual interest, compatibility, respect, good communication and most importantly choose your friend. All this is true.
When l was in my early twenties, I started listening to pastor Mildred kingley(she is a marriage and relationship coach) . I do recommend her. I was single at the time and l thought listening to her incredible wisdom would cover up my less experience in relationships. Will all the wisdom i got from her, from reading relationship books, I am embarrassed to say, I choose men, actually Mildred says “animals”. looking back to the few relationships l had. I could not have lasted in marriage if l had married some of them. I don’t know you but me,with all the wisdom l have and still gathering l still don’t know how to choose good men. I choose these men thinking they are good, howereve they will surprise me sooner or later. The truth is, you will never know someone better than their Creator.
Reasons to let God help you choose your spouse.
- God wants to guide us through the holy spirit
John 16:12 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak. The Holy Spirit is within us to guide us into the truth, and that’s God’s will for our life. Let God guide you through the spirit to your spouse.
- People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart
1 Samuel 16:7 “But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” The heart of a man is a reflection of who he truly is in the inside being. He can pretend for a while to you, but he can’t pretend to his creator. I understand attraction is a deal breaker to some people. Trust God, he will give you the desires of your heart. And one thing l know about God is that he is faithful.
- Proverb 14:12 . There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. Relationships mostly begin with the honeymoon stage, we seem not to pay attention to the red flags and the warnings in the beginning, even if we do pay attention sometimes we can’t predict the end, but God can.
- Proverb 3: 5-7
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.7 Be not wise in your own eyes; when we acknowledge God in our decision, he will surely show us the right path for our life including the right spouse, so let us not be wise in our own eyes trust Him.
- Proverb 19:14 Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers: but a prudent wife is from the LORD.” The verse clearly states a prudent wife/husband is from the Lord. Just like it says in James every good and perfect gift comes from the heavenly father. God knows the right spouse for you and wants to give you the best.
